Concert Program
Aaron Copland – Fanfare for the Common Man
Composed in 1942 following the U.S. entry into World War II, this work for brass pays tribute to the heroism of those remaining on the home front.
Daniel Pesca – Up North piano concerto
Be transported by music that evokes memories of family trips taken from Alabama up to Northern Michigan during childhood summers. Commissioned with a consortium of American orchestras, including the DSO.
Dmitri Shostakovich – Symphony No. 5
The difficulties under which Shostakovich (by then under condemnation by Stalin’s regime) was working in 1937 permeate the deep and complex emotions of this extraordinary work.

With the performance of Shostakovich’s 5th symphony, the Diablo Symphony remembers this great composer in his 50th anniversary season. The difficulties under which Shostakovich composed permeate the deep and complex emotions of this extraordinary and brilliant work. Performed alongside works by two American composers which celebrate the joys and bravery of everyday existence, this program explores the whole gamut of human emotions.

Don’t miss this powerful finale to our season!
