Our Home for the Holidays concert features Guest Conductor Cyrus Ginwala and the Ashmolean Singers, conducted by Steve Mullins.

This evening of holiday music will begin with the opening of Handel’s oratorio Messiah: the Overture and the first tenor recitative and aria, “Comfort Ye” and “Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted”.

This will be followed by Samuel Barber’s Die Natali. Written in 1960, in these “Choral Preludes for Christmas” Barber skillfully blends traditional carols (such as “O come, O come, Emmanuel” and “Adeste Fideles”) through various contrapuntal and harmonic devices into a stunning holiday work for full orchestra.

The Ashmolean Singers will join us to present three selections: “Gloria in Excelsis Deo,” “Shepherd’s Pipe Carol,” and “All is Well”. The Act I Finale (including the “Waltz of the Snowflakes”) from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” will round out our program.
