Rules of the Concerto Competition

Eligibility:

Open to string soloists born after April 1, 1997. An applicant may not be employed full time as a professional musician. Documentation of age and/or employment may be required at the discretion of the coordinator.

Requirements:

Applicants must submit a video recording of 10-12 minutes TOTAL time, including two items: 5-6 minutes from each of two contrasting movements of a concerto for possible selection to compete in September, 2021. At the competition, the concerto must be performed from memory and be at least 15 minutes in length. Applicants are expected to be able to perform the entire concerto at the finals.

Registration:

Send the $25 application fee, the completed application form, link to YouTube video recording to the competition coordinator.

Deadline:

The application must be postmarked by August 31, 2021. File uploading of the YouTube recording must also be completed by August 31, 2021.

Schedule:

The recordings will be reviewed to determine which applicants qualify for the competition. Checks of applicants not selected will not be returned. Competition acceptance will be announced in September, 2021. A scheduled time for each contestant will be mailed at that time.

Competition:

The final round of the competition will take place between at 4 pm on September 19, at the Steinway Gallery, 1605 Bonanza Street, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. The Diablo Symphony cannot provide accompanists, so contestants should bring their own.

Judges:

The judges’ decision is final.

Awards:

First Prize: $1000 Honorarium and a contract to perform the previously auditioned composition in concert with the Diablo Symphony Orchestra on November 19 and November 21, 2021, in Walnut Creek, CA.

Second Prize: $500.

Audience:

Contestants are encouraged to invite friends and relatives to the competition. No one may enter or leave during performances.
