Rules of the Concerto Competition

Open to piano soloists born after April 1, 1995. An applicant may not be employed full time as a professional musician. Documentation of age and/or employment may be required at the discretion of the coordinator.

Applicants must submit a video recording of 10-12 minutes TOTAL time, including two items: 5-6 minutes from each of two contrasting movements of a concerto for possible selection to compete in January, 2019. At the competition, the concerto must be performed from memory and be at least 15 minutes in length. Applicants are expected to be able to perform the entire concerto at the finals.

Send the $25 application fee, the completed application form, DVD (or links to online storage or YouTube video), and an optional stamped self-addressed envelope (for return of the DVD) to the competition coordinator.

The application and DVD (if submitted) must be postmarked by December 15, 2018. If uploading YouTube video, file uploading must be completed by December 15, 2018.

The recordings will be reviewed to determine which applicants qualify for the competition. Checks of applicants not selected will not be returned. Competition acceptance will be announced in January, 2019. A scheduled time for each contestant will be mailed at that time.

The final round of the competition will take place place at 4:00pm on January 6, 2019, at the Steinway Gallery, 1605 Bonanza Street, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. The Diablo Symphony cannot provide accompanists, so contestants should bring their own.

The judges’ decision is final.
